The DIN 10510 European standard states that you should have at least 120 seconds of contact time of 55°C-65°C water and detergent with the dishes during the wash part of the cycle. Obviously, the longer the cycle, the hygienically cleaner your dishes will be. As you can see from the chart opposite, the DIHR two minute cycle ensures the correct contact time when dealing with normal dishes. For a more heavy duty wash, a longer contact time is required.
